Guidance for candidates

The Electoral Commission publishes guidance for candidates and agents who wish to stand for election.

Nomination process

In order to stand validly nominated a candidate must submit nomination papers. The papers must be subscribed (signed) by ten registered parliamentary electors. 
 
You can download a nomination pack as well from the electoral commission website.
 
The deposit to be paid for a nomination is £500.
 
Nomination papers and deposits can only be delivered between the hours of 10.00am and 4.00pm on Tuesday 9, Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 May 2017. 
 
The (Acting) Returning Officer is offering an informal checking service for nomination papers by appointment only between 9.30am and 4.00pm on Tuesday 9 May and Wednesday 10 May, and 9.30am – 12 noon on Thursday 11 May. Appointments will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. You are strongly advised to use this service.

Wednesday 31 May 2017 Deadline to apply for a proxy vote at 5pm
Monday 22 May 2017 Deadline for registering to vote at midnight
Thursday 1 June 2017 Register to be used for 8 June General Election published
Thursday 1 June 2017 Deadline for notification of appointment  of polling and counting agents
Friday 2 June 2017 First date that electors can apply for a replacement of lost postal votes
Tuesday 6 June 2017 Deadline for notification of appointment of sub agents
Thursday 8 June 2017 Polling Day. Polling stations open from 7.00am – 10.00pm
Thursday 8 June 2017 Count begins at 10.00pm followed by declaration of results
