Grit bins

We provide and maintain about 192 grit bins across Manchester.

You can use the grit to treat local roads and pavements that are not included within our programme, but using this grit for your own property or personal use is illegal, and you would be liable to prosecution.

We check and refill grit bins once a week from December through to April. If there is a need to preserve salt stocks to keep main roads open, the bins may be refilled less often.

The locations for grit bins are decided in consultation with neighbourhood teams and local Councillors, based on your feedback.

Report problems

Tell us in confidence about misuse of salt from the bins, or let us know if your local grit bin is empty, damaged or missing.

Contact us on 0161 234 5004 or email us at contact@manchester.gov.uk

If you see a salt bin being stolen, report it directly to the Police along with the make, model and registration number of any vehicle involved.
