Parks, leisure and the arts St Peter's Square Conservation Area

Introduction

St Peter's Square conservation area is situated in Manchester city centre. It is an area which contains a mixture of commercial, cultural and civic buildings. The name derives from St. Peter's Church, which stood in the centre of St Peter's Square from 1788 to 1907.

The conservation area was designated in December 1973 and the boundaries are: Museum Street, Peter Street and Southmill Street (a common boundary with the Deansgate/Peter Street conservation area); Central Street and Library Walk (a common boundary with the Albert Square conservation area); Dickinson Street and George Street (a common boundary with the George Street conservation area); Hall Street, Bale Street, Lower Mosley Street and Windmill Street. The Square is overlooked by the Town Hall Extension, Central Library and the Midland Hotel.
