Pedestrian crossings
Types of pedestrian crossings
To protect pedestrians and to help them move about the streets easily, different kinds of pedestrian crossings can be installed at junctions or busy crossing points.
The following types of pedestrian crossings are used in Manchester :
Puffin crossing
- red/amber/green traffic lights with no flashing phase;
- red standing figure/green walking figure pedestrian lights located above the crossing control button to encourage pedestrians to look towards approaching traffic; and
- detectors keep the traffic stopped for as long as there are pedestrians on the crossing.
Pelican crossing
- red/amber/green traffic lights that may have a flashing phase;
- red standing figure/green walking figure pedestrian lights located on the opposite side of the road; and
- traffic is stopped for a fixed time, regardless of whether pedestrians are still crossing the road.
Toucan crossing
Similar to Puffin crossings but accommodate cyclists as well as pedestrians.
Zebra crossing
- the familiar black and white bars across the road with flashing yellow belisha beacons;
- traffic should give way to pedestrians who are starting to cross; and
- pedestrians need to exercise more care when crossing zebra crossings.
Pedestrian refuges
Allows pedestrians to cross the road in two stages, with a safe refuge to wait in the centre of the road.
