Flytipping
What is flytipping?
Flytipping is a serious offence, which severely damages an area's appearance. It can also attract other problems such as infestation or arson and makes an area look run down.
We will remove flytipping or dumped items from public land.
What you can do
Reporting flytipping or dumped rubbish if you have witnessed someone or have evidence relating to the perpetrator then please let us know. You will need the following information:
- what has been dumped; and
- location of items.
Please call if you think the dumped items are hazardous, so we can respond more quickly. Hazardous items include:
- asbestos;
- chemicals;
- gas canisters;
- oil drums; and
- large amounts of raw meat.
What we can do
We will remove flytipping or dumped items from alleyways, public highway (roads / pavements) or council land.
We will investigate incidents, to catch and prosecute offenders. If convicted of flytipping you could be fined up to £50,000 and up to 1 year in prison.
We will also investigate reports of dumped items on private land and work with the landowner to ensure the removal.
What we don't do
We do not remove dumped bin bags or surplus bin bags. You need to put these in your bin for the next collection or take these to your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC).
We do not remove commercial or industrial waste, you will need to contact a commercial waste collection company.
For flytipping on the waterways or the railways, please contact British Waterways or Network Rail.
