The role of the Coroner's Officers
Manchester City Council Coroners Officers
The Coroner has a team of officers based in our city centre office. They receive reports of deaths, make inquiries on behalf of the Coroner and communicate with relatives. These are the people you will speak to when you get in touch with the us.
The team also includes administrative and courtroom staff.
If an investigation or inquest is opened into your relative's death, a Senior Coroners Officer will take responsibility for the case. They will be your personal contact throughout the process.
Police Coroners Officers
The Coroner works closely with Greater Manchester Police. The Police provide Coroner's Liaison Officers, who are specially trained to work with relatives, arrange formal identification of bodies and take statements.
If an inquest is opened into your relative's death, one of these Police Officers will phone you and may also arrange to visit. It does not mean that there are any suspicious circumstances or anything to be concerned about. It is simply that the Police have the skills and resources to go out into the community and gather information on behalf of the Coroner.
