Births, marriages, deaths & nationality The inquest system

If an inquest has been opened into your relative's death

The Coroner will open an inquest following about 10% (one in ten) of deaths. For most families, this will be the first time they have dealt with the process.

This section of the website explains why an inquest has been opened, what exactly is involved and roughly how long it will take. We hope it will help to put your mind at rest about any concerns and uncertainty you may have.

We will do all we can to ensure that the process runs smoothly and that you are left with clear answers about what happened to your loved one.

If you wish to speak with the officer assigned to your relative's case, please contact us by phone on 0161 219 2222 between 9am and 4pm or email coroners@manchester.gov.uk .
