Schools, education and childcare Starting school later

After the decision is made

If it's agreed that your child can start school outside their normal age group, be aware that they may not be kept in that year. The headteacher may still move your child up to their normal age group if they decide that is what's best for their education.

When your child goes to secondary school or if they move school then the new school may put your child back into their normal age group.

Remember you will need to apply again for a school place in the following year and we can't guarantee that you will get one of your preferences.

If your child goes to nursery you will need to speak to them about your child staying on another year.
