Look for a home
Your housing options
The housing scene is more complex than it was in the days of massive council estates and cheap homes to buy. There is a big demand for rented homes in many areas.
So it's important to be flexible and think imaginatively about how to increase your chances.
Here are a few tips:
Check Homefinder and Homeswap
See if you have a chance of a home with a housing association, the city council or another not-for-profit landlord. Get information about how to register, check out available homes and bid for a home online.
If you already rent from a not-for-profit landlord you could have a better chance of moving quickly by exchanging your home with another tenant. Search online for tenants who live in the type of home you want and who are looking for a place like yours.
Look in different areas
Many areas have benefited from multi-million pound investment - you might be surprised at how things have picked up. Others are in line for similar upgrades; you could really reap the benefits in a few years. The more areas you consider, the more chance you have.
Consider another property type
If you'll only take one type of home, you'll limit your chances. Many multi-storey blocks run by not-for-profit landlords, for instance, have been radically improved and can be easier to come by. Others flats - some close to the city centre - are now available to buy, offering a cheap step on the homeowning ladder.
Think about renting privately
Look for a privately-rented home, and you could find just what you want - and quick!
Look at these great advantages
-
homes available now across Manchester - with no waiting lists and no red tape!
-
a choice of size and types - from one bed studios to houses big enough for the largest families. Say goodbye to overcrowding!
-
rents you can afford: if you're on a low income you can get Housing Benefit to cover your rent.
-
choose from furnished, part-furnished, or unfurnished homes to suit you best.

Find out about low-cost ownership
You may not think you can afford to buy, but there are lots of low-cost schemes that may be in reach. Some are affordable because they allow you to buy a share of your home, and rent the rest until you can afford to buy it outright. See low-cost home ownership.
