Manchester's parks and open spaces

Heaton Park: hot air balloonsIn this area of the site you can find a park or playground and learn more about Manchester's open spaces.

Manchester offers 138 parks, gardens and open spaces, 40 allotment sites and an additional 25 nature conservation sites within the city's Irk, Medlock and Mersey river valleys.

Facilities include:

  • tea rooms
  • two farms
  • environmental classrooms
  • two large historic halls
  • children's play areas
  • traditional trams
  • horse-riding centres
  • a water sports training centre
  • multisports and tennis courts
  • 15 Sure Start centres
  • over a hundred football pitches
  • a roadtrain and
  • a cob house.

In 2008, Manchester's parks were awarded 27 Green Flag Awards for meeting the national standard of excellence for parks and green spaces in England and Wales.

Manchester's parks are a very important educational, environmental, cultural, health and economic resource for the city. They are places where people can play, socialise, exercise, get active, experience the 'great outdoors', learn about wildlife and take part in a wide choice of leisure activities and cultural festivals.
