St John’s Primary School Pupils Visit Town Hall

16 July 2007

This week the Year 2 class from St John’s RC Primary School, Chorlton visited the Town Hall in Manchester. The children had a tour of the building and were also shown around the Lord Mayor’s private apartments.

At school they are learning about historic buildings and Headteacher, Luke Dillon thought that it would help the children in their studies to visit the Town Hall. He said: "The children were very excited about their visit because they had all seen the Town Hall before but had never had the opportunity to go inside it."

When the children arrived at the Town Hall they were given a tour of the building by Councillor Sheila Newman, Manchester City Council's Executive Member for Children's Services, and also met the Leader of the Council, Sir Richard Leese.

As a special treat for the children, the Lord Mayor of Manchester, Councillor Glynn Evans, gave them a tour of his private apartments and the children had their photograph taken with him. Councillor Newman commented: "Education is not just about sitting in a classroom listening to a teacher; it's also about enhancing your knowledge and learning in the real world.

"Today these Year 2 children had a great time exploring one of the city's finest buildings and I am sure this has helped bring the building and its history alive for them as well as helping them to further their learning of historic buildings."

Luke Dillon added: "The children thoroughly enjoyed their day. Not only did they have a tour of a beautiful historic building, they also met some very important people who work at the Town Hall, including the Lord Mayor of Manchester himself."
