The Lord Mayor welcomes the Reverend Jesse Jackson to Manchester

The renowned civil rights campaigner The Reverend Jesse Jackson Senior will join the Lord Mayor of Manchester for a civic reception held in his honour during his visit to Manchester, August 25 to 26

The Reverend is visiting Manchester as part of a tour to launch, Equanomics UK, an initiative of the 1990 Trust, focusing on racial justice through economic equality.

The Reverend is a supporter of the campaign which looks at wage inequalities, international trade policies, the impact of credit, loans and debts and the impact of poverty on social conditions such as health, housing and education.

The visit is planned by Longsight based Operation Manchester Black Vote (OMBV) and partners, the Black Majority and Black-led Churches. The Lord Mayor of Manchester, Councillor Glynn Evans will be hosting a civic dinner on the evening of Saturday August 25 in the grade I listed Town Hall.

The Lord Mayor said: "It is truly an honour to extend this invitation to one of the greatest civil rights leaders in the world. We are delighted that The Reverend is visiting Manchester and hope to make it an occasion to remember and to celebrate his work. He has campaigned tirelessly for decades for all minority groups creating better living and working conditions for people everywhere and he continues to do so with vigour."

The Reverend Jesse Jackson, who worked alongside Martin Luther King, will also be marking the contributions that Black communities have made to modern Britain as well as commemorating of the abolition of the slave trade.
