10 September 2007
The government has invited Manchester to join a top level task force on guns and gangs.
The home Secretary, Jacquie Smith, announced on the BBC that she wanted Manchester to join a group of other major cities including Liverpool and Birmingham to act as special advisers to Government ministers.
The group will include senior officers from Greater Manchester Police and leading council officers.
Manchester City Council's deputy leader, Jim Battle welcomed the initiative: "We have been in close discussion with the Home Office about working together. Building on the experience and knowledge we have already gained in this area we are keen to play our fullest role."
