Manchester's Joint Health Unit Shortlisted For HSJ Award
14 September 2007
Manchester’s Joint Health Unit has been shortlisted for the 2007 Health Service Journal awards for their positive images of older people in the city. The Joint Health Unit will present their work to the judges of the 2007 Award on Friday 21st September.
The Joint Health Unit were shortlisted for the Valuing Older People positive images of older people in their ground breaking calendars of 2005 - Challenging Older people in Manchester; 2006 - Growing Older with Attitude; and 2007 - Older and Bolder. Month by month the photographs challenge stereotypes and include an older man and woman playing in a jazz band, an 80 year old city-centre resident who has all the culture she wants 'within walking distance', a film maker and two women from the Older Wiser Lesbian Group.
The campaign has also featured a city centre billboard campaign, and a community-led exhibition.
Councillor Val Stevens, deputy leader of Manchester City Council said: "It's great that the HSJ has recognised the work of the Joint Health Unit in publishing positive, alternative images of older people that challenge stereotypes and provide an inspiration for us all. The prestigious HSJ awards are highly sought after - to be shortlisted for one of these awards is something that the Joint Health Unit should be very proud of. I wish them luck."
