Manchester celebrates new teachers
24 September 2007
Manchester City Council celebrated the induction of nearly 200 new teachers at a ceremony at the Midland Hotel on Friday, 21 September.
The teachers work in more than 170 nursery, primary, secondary and special schools in the city and each one were awarded the General Teaching Council's certificate stating they have satisfactorily completed their induction year.
Manchester offers tailored induction programmes to new teachers, along with coaching, shadowing and networking opportunities, plus overseas teaching opportunities in some cases.
The Executive Member for Children's Services for Manchester City Council, Councillor Sheila Newman, said: "This is a significant achievement for these new teachers and they will have developed enormously, both professionally and personally, during their induction year. We wish them all the best in their future careers. We also owe thanks to all those induction tutors who worked so hard to bring everything to a successful conclusion in this crucial first year."
The guest speaker at the induction ceremony was Sir John Jones, former head teacher of three secondary schools who has also worked on education policy at national level and is now teaching at Liverpool University.
Also attending the event was the Lord Mayor, Councillor Glynn Evans.
