Respect comes to Brooklands
24 September 2007
The successful programme of Respect Action Weeks, which is being rolled out across Manchester, will come to Brooklands a week today.
Throughout the respect action weeks Manchester City Council, Greater Manchester Police and the local community work together to tackle low-level crime, anti-social behaviour and improve the environment.
Respect Action Weeks have already been held in 6 wards in the city with impressive results. In Bradford overall crime was down by 58% compared with the same period last year. In Gorton North criminal damage was reduced by 41 %, in Chorlton Park wounding was down by 50% and in Ancoats and Clayton domestic burglaries were down by 60%.
Throughout the Respect Action Weeks the council, Greater Manchester Police and the community work alongside a whole range of agencies including the fire service, housing associations, British Gas and the DVLA.
They work together to tackle crime and anti social behaviour through high profile joint patrols. The idea is also to leave a lasting legacy by supporting local people to get involved in improving their neighbourhood.
Manchester City Council Deputy Leader Jim Battle said: "The Respect Action Weeks just show what can be achieved when we all work together alongside the local community. We ran a number of pilot schemes throughout the summer which proved so successful that we decided to roll the programme out in sixteen wards across the city."
The Brooklands respect Action Week runs from October 1st. The week of activity will culminate in a community fun event from 10am until 2pm on October 6th at the Church of the Nazarene on Wendover Road.
During the event the Lord Mayor Councillor Glynn Evans will be presenting special awards to young people for their work in the community
