Crime down during Brooklands Respect Week

10 October 2007

A week of high profile activity in Brooklands resulted in a 51.5% reduction in crime in the area.

More than 20 agencies worked together during Brooklands Respect Action Week, 1 to 7 October, to tackle issues raised by local residents.

The week was organised as a joint effort by Manchester City Council, Greater Manchester Police, Greater Manchester Fire Service, British Gas and other partners to help reduce crime, tackle anti-social behaviour and to support local residents in helping to improve their environment.

Compared to the same period last year, overall crime went down by 51.5%. Car crime, anti-social behaviour, alcohol misuse, physical attack and criminal damage were among concerns raised by residents.

Following successful pilots earlier this year, a whole series of Respect Action Weeks are currently being rolled out across 15 wards in Manchester until February.

Manchester City Council's deputy leader Jim Battle said: "These results demonstrate just what can be achieved when the council, police, community and other partners work together. We will continue to consult closely with residents and work with partners to build on this success."
