A dozen Manchester schools have won the coveted International School Award 2007, funded by the Department for Children, School and Families (DCSF) and managed by the British Council.

The ISA award is made to schools which can show well-established links with an international partner school, and demonstrate seven international activities either in the next or current school year. The activities must be varied, involve most of the school and the majority of school subjects, and include at least one in-depth collaborative project with an international partner.

Activities must be curriculum-based, and trips and visits abroad with no follow-up or preparation work - skiing trips, for example - will not qualify.

The award is made for three years, after which schools can re-apply for the award, and meanwhile they can use the ISA logo in all their international activities. Each school also receives a trophy.

The Executive Member for Children's Services, Councillor Sheila Newman, said: "We are an international city with a wide mix of nationalities, so it is natural that we should develop links with other communities, especially overseas, so that young people can get to know about the lives of other youngsters and create useful relationships and insights. The ISA is a terrific resource to enable this to happen and I congratulate all our winning schools for developing so many international activities."
