Weaving our way to a Cleaner World!
18 October 2007
Visitors to Fog Lane Park are in for a surprise this week.
A team from Manchester City Council and the Mersey Valley Warden Service are wading into the park's large pond today and tomorrow (Thursday and Friday) to install a living willow fence around the pond's three smaller islands.
The process involves weaving willow branches around wooden posts to create a natural barrier that will prevent the resident wildfowl from accessing them. The islands have been suffering from overgrazing by the lake's bird population, preventing plant growth. Once the fence is up a variety of water-loving plants, including Purple Loosetrife, will be planted.
The project is a joint initiative by the Mersey Valley Warden Service, Manchester Leisure Warden Service and Wildabout Manchester Team. It is supported by Manchester's Clean Up the World campaign and BBC Breathing Places.
The team will also be re-planting numerous other pond-side areas which have suffered from overgrazing and resulting erosion.
