Respect Action Week comes to Newton Heath and Miles Platting

23 October 2007

From Monday 29 October a Respect Action Week aimed at driving down crime and reducing anti-social behaviour will take place in Newton Heath and Miles Platting.

The week involves over 20 agencies working in partnership including Greater Manchester Police, New East Manchester, British Gas, TV licensing, traffic wardens, Customs, benefit agencies, Manchester City Council's licensing department and housing associations.

Each day joint agency patrols will go door to door to talk to local residents about their concerns and every evening they will focus on addressing youth nuisance and crime issues. Additional youth activities including DJ sessions, T shirt design and a variety of sports including gym work and football will be organised to encourage young people to get involved in sport, music and the arts.

Greater Manchester Fire Service will be installing smoke alarms and giving safety advice in advance of Bonfire night. Also throughout the week trading standards officers, neighbourhood wardens and police officers will visit off-licences to ensure they are complying with licensing conditions and receive advice about the consequences of selling alcohol to children. GMP will work with school attendance officers to conduct three truancy sweeps, the DVLA to check for car tax evasion and First Bus inspectors to undertake increased inspections on their buses.

Sean McGonigle, Director of Regeneration for New East Manchester said: "Previous Respect Action weeks have been extremely successful with up to 50 per cent reduction in crime and anti-social behaviour and we anticipate a similar result will be achieved in Newton Heath and Miles Platting during this week. This is an excellent of example of how joint agency working can deliver a real difference to our communities."
