Northenden Market reaps rewards

25 October 2007

The new farmers’ and producers’ market in Northenden will be returning for the second time on Saturday November 3 with a visit from the Lord Mayor.

The first day of trading last month was so successful, with up to 7,000 shoppers that some traders sold out before the end of the day.

With people coming to do their shopping from Northenden, Sale, Didsbury and as far away as Cheshire, the market looks set to be a success and many of the neighbouring businesses also reported an increase in customer footfall on the day.

St Anne's Hospice shop located near the market said that it had been very good for business with 50 per cent additional income and consequently they were the best performing shop in the region.

The local Estate Agents said that the market can only improve the area and that it should bring new businesses into the community.

Traders said that they were thrilled with sales and customer feedback. Fruit and vegetables, fish, poultry, meats, speciality cheese, breads, pastries, home made pies and cakes and so much more will be available again on Saturday. This time traders will bring in even more produce with them to satisfy demand from 10am until 4pm.

Councillor Eddy Newman, Executive Member for Manchester's Markets, said: "Northenden Food Market has initially proved a great success with local shoppers and food-lovers from across the region. It is being held for a six-month trial period and we will be reviewing the market's long-term sustainability in Spring 2008.

"This will enable us to evaluate the market, month by month so that we can make an informed decision - we are hopeful that the next few months will see the same positive feedback from the general public, market traders and businesses in the area. Northenden's secret is out so come down and shop till you drop."

The market will continue to open on the first Saturday of each month from 10am until 4pm off Palatine Road in front of Woolworths. There are public car parks nearby.
