Design Centre receives top Pledge Award.
25 October 2007
Manchester Craft and Design Centre has become the first shopping centre to qualify for Manchester’s Environmental Business Pledge.
Every one of the twenty units in the Craft and Design Centre, in Manchester's vibrant Northern Quarter, has taken 'the pledge' and qualified for the Bronze award, this means they are operating responsibly and have taken the first step on the ladder to reduce waste. Many of the businesses are already keen to start working towards silver, which looks at energy and water reduction and recycling.
Councillor Neil Swannick, Executive Member for the Environment said: "We are delighted that Manchester Craft and Design Centre is the first complete shopping centre to have all of its tenants signed up to the pledge, taking the first steps to reducing their carbon footprint and improving the environment in Manchester.
"Already over 900 business have signed up to find out more about how reducing waste and resources can help them reduce costs."
Manchester City Council and Groundwork are working with partners throughout the city to attract more businesses to the scheme; Cityco (formerly Manchester City Centre Management Company) has helped enlist the Craft and Design Centre to become the first shopping centre to have every tenant signed up to the pledge.
Gordon Reid Chief Executive of Cityco said: "We are delighted be working with Manchester City Council and Groundwork to promote the Environmental Business Pledge, CityCo are committed to improving the environmental quality of city centre.
"The Manchester Craft and Design Centre is currently celebrating 25 years at the old Smithfield market on Oak Street, so it would be great if they could progress to the silver award in their silver anniversary year. "
