Work starts on Openshaw housing scheme

26 October 2007

Worked has started today on the first phase of a major new housing development in the Toxteth Street neighbourhood of Openshaw in east Manchester.

The £65 million scheme, which is designed to represent a modern interpretation of traditional terraced streets will be built to the Council's 'Design for Access' space standards, and comprises a range of 390 two and three storey townhouses, 36 two bedroom apartments and 6 bungalows. Secure parking, traffic calming measures and local amenities have also been incorporated into the plans.

The first phase will comprise 83 homes including 65 two, three and four bedroom houses and 18 two bedroom apartments. The houses will be a mixture of private housing available for purchase through the developer, Lovell, and social housing available for rent through Adactus Housing Association.

Eddie Smith, deputy chief executive of New East Manchester said: "These high quality new homes are tailored to meet the needs of the existing and future community and all offer the energy efficient, cost effective benefits and comfort that a modern design brings. Particular effort has been made to ensure existing residents are able to remain in the area. All residents will be able to enjoy all the improvements to the area that New East Manchester's regeneration programme is delivering including the new health centre, a £40 million district centre and Sporting Edge community sports facility."

Lovell regional director Nigel Yates says: "This community-orientated new housing scheme has been a long time in the planning and I am delighted that we are now in a position to begin the work. It will make an important contribution to the wider regeneration of the area by answering the demand for high-quality new homes for sale and affordable rent locally."

Paul Lees, Group Chief Executive at Adactus Housing Group said: "It is an exciting time for the Toxteth Street neighbourhood. We have a long standing commitment to the area and the local community and look forward to working closely with local residents and being part of the neighbourhood's exciting future."

National housebuilder and housing regeneration specialist, Lovell, together with PRP Architects and Adactus Housing Association are all partners in the Toxteth Street neighbourhood development scheme.

The first homes are due for completion in Autumn 2008.
