Young people help clean up Clayton

30 October 2007

Young people from Clayton and Newton Heath took to the streets with bin bags and litter pickers last week to help clean up their local environment.

The clean up around John Heywood Street was organised by Manchester Youth Service as part of the Super Respect multi agency programme of activities aimed at young people in the Clayton and Newton Heath area.

A partnership between the Youth Service, Manchester Leisure, schools, Greater Manchester Police, young people themselves, and other partners, Super Respect was launched in September and runs until March next year.

The six month project was set up to tackle crime, disorder and anti social behaviour by offering a range of activities to young people aimed at diverting them away from crime and engaging them in activities that have a wider positive impact on the community.

Deputy Leader of Manchester City Council, Councillor Jim Battle, said: "Super Respect is about young people, the Council and police all working together for the benefit of the whole community - working to make a difference both to the lives of young people and to the neighbourhoods in which they live.

"These young people have done a great job of cleaning up their local area and they should feel proud of their efforts.

"Now we hope people will take pride in the area and make sure it remains that way."
