Kitchens' top tips to reduce carbon footprint

7 November 2007

Manchester City Council’s catering department will be presenting three hampers to winners of a competition to get catering staff thinking about reducing their carbon footprint.

Manchester Fayre, the city's catering arm set a competition on how kitchens could reduce waste, save energy and improve their carbon footprint. This comes as a best practice energy-saving guide is currently being drafted for all staff to follow.

Abraham Moss Centre in Crumpsall, Mauldeth Road Primary School in Withington and Manley Park Infants in Whalley Range have scooped the prizes for their top tips.

Using energy efficient light bulbs, turning all switches off completely, using only the required amount of water in a kettle or a saucepan and recycling all materials were just some of the suggestions put forward.

They will all receive a hamper packed with goodies. Councillor Bernard Priest said: "We are all working to reduce waste and become more energy efficient and it is great that staff in these kitchens are ahead of the game and considering a whole host of ways to improve their carbon footprint. They are worthy winners." For more information on school meals visit www.manchester.gov.uk/site/scripts/documents_info.php?documentID=608
