Drop in event in East Manchester on new Academy

7 December 2007

Members of the public are invited to go along to The Grange community centre on Tuesday 11 December to find out more information about plans to open a new Academy in east Manchester.

The planned Academy is part of Manchester's plans to radically transform education in the city by linking new Academies to future growth sectors of the city's economy.

It is proposed to open a brand new Academy on Grey Mare Lane in east Manchester in September 2010, specialising in the Built Environment.

Sponsors of the new Academy are Bovis Lend Lease UK, Laing O'Rourke, Manchester City Council and MANCAT (Manchester College of Arts and Technology).

The Academy in east Manchester is one of seven new Academies proposed across the city.

Councillor Sheila Newman, Manchester City Council's Executive Member, Children's Services, said: "These plans will improve the life chances and future success of all pupils in the city by ensuring that they leave school with the right skills and qualifications to give them the best possible chance of accessing further and higher education and good jobs in the future."

Representatives from the sponsors of the new Academy will be on hand at the drop in event at the Grange Community Centre, Pilgrim Drive, Beswick, M11 3TQ, which runs from 3 pm to 6 pm on Tuesday 11 December.
