“What Manchester Women Want”
14 January 2008
Manchester women will help create an exciting exhibition for International Women’s Day, Saturday 8 March 2008.
Women's groups and individuals across the city are invited to take part in the project, entitled "What Manchester Women Want".
They will have the opportunity to work with professional artist, Charlotte Newson, to develop their contribution to the exhibition. A whole range of different skills and media can be used such as music, IT, visual art, sewing, knitting, poetry and film.
Their work will be displayed in Manchester Town Hall's impressive sculpture hall, providing one of the highlights of the city's celebrations for International Women's Day.
Manchester City Council's lead member on women's issues, Councillor Sue Murphy, said: "I hope as many women as possible will take advantage of this unique opportunity to really say what Manchester women want. We look forward to a day of celebrating women's achievements and exploring the issues that affect our lives."
This year, Manchester City Council has commissioned the Pankhurst Centre to work with women's groups to celebrate two milestones in the history of women's suffrage. These are:
- The 90th anniversary of limited suffrage (1918)
- The 80th anniversary of full voting rights (1928)
