School to play full part in Respect Action Week
11 February 2008
Pupils from Temple primary school in Cheetham will be playing a full part in the Respect Action Week planned for the area from 18 to 25 February.
Respect Action Weeks are a joint programme devised by Manchester City Council and Greater Manchester Police to carry out intensive enforcement work, tackle low-level criminality and anti social behaviour whilst working alongside local residents to inspire a sense of pride in their community and respect for their neighbours.
Schools, youth workers, British Gas, the DVLA , and Greater Manchester Fire Service will work alongside Manchester City Council, Greater Manchester Police and the local community on combating low level crime and protecting the environment.
Pupils from Temple Primary School in Cheetham Hill will be involved in a litter pick at Smedley playing fields and making bird boxes, while on 19 February they will hold a series of workshops with stalls at the school.
The areas covered will include healthy eating, first aid lessons, respecting the environment, including the planting of sunflower seeds and recycling, co-operative games, making clay beasts, and orienteering within the school grounds to focus on co-operation while under pressure.
The school has more than 500 pupils, and its head, Vicky Morton, said: "The children will gain a greater understanding of how to get along with each other and how important it is to care for their environment. Respect is something we should never take for granted, we need to earn it and give it."
The Executive Member for Children's Services, Councillor Sheila Newman, said: "This is showing how to put respect into action - respect for each other and for our environment. These children can hopefully carry a strong message into the future as parents and useful members of society."
There will also be an open day at the Waterloo Centre, Waterloo Road in Cheetham on Saturday 23 February from 1 pm to 4 pm with a children's entertainer and refreshments available.
