Schools on Winning Form with 5-a-day

4 March 2008

Newall Green Primary School is living up to its name after its green-fingered pupils won a competition about how food is grown, in support of the year of food and farming.

The competition was launched across all primary schools in January, by Manchester City Council's catering service Manchester Fayre.

Children were asked to fill in fun activity sheets and answer questions about the produce grown on a farm and the benefits of eating their 5-a-day. The response was phenomenal but Newall Green Primary School was named the overall winner after returning a whopping 280 completed activity sheets.

Their prize is £100 towards an allotment for the school so the pupils can really begin to exercise their green fingers.

Councillor Bernard Priest, Executive Member with responsibility for school meals said: "The competition has been a fun and interactive way to encourage children to eat healthily and we've had a tremendous response. Congratulations to Newall Green for all their winning entries and I hope they enjoy their new allotment and the challenge to grow their own fruit and veg!"

All the other schools that took part had their entries put into a hat and one child from each school was drawn out to win a mini-green bean growing kit.
