Maine Road street naming competition - winners to be announced
19 March 2008
The names of five new streets on the site of Manchester City FC's former Maine Road stadium, chosen from suggestions by local residents, will be announced tomorrow.
The names have been chosen after a competition inviting suggestions to name five new streets in the development on the former stadium site, at the heart of the regeneration of Moss Side and Rusholme.
More than 350 Manchester residents responded to the call for suggestions reflecting sources of pride - past, present or future - in the area.
The winning street names were chosen by a panel consisting of ward councillors, residents and developers, Lowry Homes.
Councillor Alistair Cox, chair of the Maine Road Steering Group, said: "We had a great response to our call for street name suggestions. It seems to have caught people's imagination, from primary school children to older people . Their ideas show the affection in which this site is held, people's pride in the area and recognition of the development's importance to Moss Side and Rusholme's future.
The competition was run by the 'My Place, My Space' Maine Road arts programme - led by the City Council in partnership with Lowry Homes and community organisations - which is delivering public art and involvement as part of the new development.
The Maine Place development will consist of 434 homes (197 three or four bedroom family houses and 237 apartments ranging from one to three bedrooms). A new state-of-the-art primary school, merging St Edward's RC and Bishop Bilsborrow RC, will be created as part of the development. There is also an agreement in principle from Manchester Primary Care NHS Trust for a new health centre on the site.
