Baking on the Menu at Parklands High
31 March 2008
Pupils at Parklands High School in Wythenshawe are going back to basics by learning essential cooking skills with Manchester Fayre, the catering arm of Manchester City Council.
The Year 10 pupils have had the benefit of Catering Manager Helen Dyer's expertise each week since September, as part of their Technical Services course.
The classes teach practical culinary skills as well as promoting healthy eating, with cakes and sweet treats strictly off the menu in favour of more nutritious foods. Pupils have learnt to bake a range of breads including poppy seed and multi-grain loaves and also pizzas with a range of healthy toppings.
Catering Manager Helen Dyer said: "The classes are a fun and interactive way for the pupils to learn and their progress has been phenomenal. I'm really proud of all their achievements and hope that they continue to build upon what they have learnt."
Councillor Bernard Priest, Manchester City Council's Executive Member with responsibility for school meals said: "As the school meals-provider across the city, Manchester Fayre is also committed to educating youngsters about the importance of a healthy diet, and equipping them with the knowledge and skills they will need in the future."
