Everyday rubbish recycled in Sportcity challenge

18 April 2008

Everyday rubbish has been transformed into useful items, including CD racks and can openers, with help of east Manchester students and Earl Barrett, ex MCFC player and England international.

This took place at a 'Junkstop' workshop held today (17 April) at Sportcity in east Manchester, as part of Manchester's 100 Days Challenge.

Over 150 pupils from east Manchester schools including St Barnabus and Seymour Road primary schools, along with St Peter's and Cedar Mount high schools, took part in the event, which focussed on the importance of recycling.

A variety of items were made including hand-brushes, children's stools and badges. Pupils also received a lesson all about wild flowers before planting a variety of species including primulas and alpines.

In the afternoon pupils took take part in a range of sporting activities, including athletics, squash, tennis and basketball, facilitated by the Sports Development team.

Sean McGonigle, Director of Regeneration for New East Manchester, said: "New East Manchester has recognised that regeneration of the area must be sustainable and this includes the importance of recycling and minimising waste. This event gives young people the opportunity to learn about the benefits recycling and the importance of acting responsibly to help maintain our environment."
