Manchester City Council

Runners and supporters throng the city

Manchester was filled with people on Sunday 18 May when 31,000 runners took to the streets for the sixth Bupa Great Manchester Run and many more thousands cheered them on.

Runners included well known faces including Tupele Dorgu, who plays Kelly Crabtree in Coronation Street, Waterloo Road star Denise Welch and John Altman, the evil 'Nasty' Nick Cotton from Eastenders.

Manchester City Council, who have been partners in the event since its inception in 2003, were represented by runners including the Leader of the Council, Sir Richard Leese, who swapped his suit for running shorts to take part for the first time.

The run is one of the top-level sporting events that form part of Manchester World Sport 08, the single biggest year of world sport in Manchester since the XVII Commonwealth Games in 2002.
