Russian menu marks United’s big match

23 May 2008

Pupils of a Manchester primary school got a taste of Russia yesterday as United prepared to do battle with Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League Final.

The special lunch menu at Cavendish Community Primary School in West Didsbury also included half-time oranges, special Champions League cup cakes and winners' medal biscuits.

Main course choices were kotlety (Moscow meatballs with red onion gravy), Pirozhki pie (cheese, potato & spring onion pie), Belinsky baked fish and "St Pittasburg" pockets.

Accompaniments were cabbage, beetroot & onion salad, Russian salad, boiled potatoes, and garlic & herb bread rolls.

Councillor Bernard Priest, Manchester City Council's Executive Member whose responsibilities include school meals services, said: "The UEFA Champions League Final has been the talk of the city so having some Russian food on the menu was our way of marking the big day for United."
