Celebrating father figures

10 June 2008

Statistics estimate that 40% of adults won't see their dads on Father's Day, but that certainly won't be the case at Rusholme's Sure Start Children's Centre this weekend.

Fathers are invited to visit the centre on Sunday with their children and enjoy a day of fun activities celebrating the importance of dads in their children's lives.

Cllr Sheila Newman, Executive Member Children's Services, Manchester City Council says: "Sure Start offers a range of services to both mothers and fathers including supporting parents as parents. Fathers are a hugely important part of their children's lives and we want to mark their invaluable contribution to creating a generation of well-rounded, secure and confident children. "

And it's not just biological dads we are celebrating, but also all those men who are acting as fathers to children. Any male that represents a good role model to a child deserves our admiration."

The event at the Great Western Street centre is being run in partnership with Families Need Fathers (FNF), a charity that offers information and support to families undergoing a separation.

The Sure Start centre is keen to offer services that are of benefit to fathers and is in the process of setting up a group solely for men advising on health, family, and employment and training.

Sue Maitland, Head of the Rusholme Centre says: "Dads are such an intrinsic part of society that we should do everything we can to support and help them be the best fathers they possibly can.

"Our Father's Day event is an opportunity to celebrate all the good things about fathers' relationships with their children while having fun."

The Father's Day activities will run from 12noon to 4pm and will host a visit from representatives from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service as well as the mounted division from Greater Manchester Police.
