The taste of the Caribbean comes to Crabtree

The half-term holidays may now be a distant memory for most, but for pupils at Crabtree Primary school, the taste of the tropics was on the menu as they celebrated Caribbean Day.
Last Thursday, for one day only, the school in Higher Blackley was transformed into a tropical island, complete with palm trees, brightly coloured garlands and a unique lunchtime menu provided by Manchester Fayre, the school meals provider for Manchester City Council.
Pupils ate exotic delicacies such as Caribbean chicken, Jamaican fish, fried dumplings and spicy potatoes. This was finished off with pineapple pie and coconut crisps and washed down with banana fruit punch.
Councillor Bernard Priest, the Executive Member with a responsibility for school meals at Manchester City Council said: "This is just one of a number of themed days offered through Manchester Fayre and they're proving to be extremely popular. They're great fun and are helping to educate young people about other cultures and food from across the world."
Other themed days that have been held in school dining rooms across Manchester include French, Mexican, Spanish, Italian, Indian, Chinese and Irish.
