Manchester’s Lord Mayor Welcomes Gay Youth

16 June 2008

Lesbian and Gay Youth Manchester (LGYM), celebrates 30 years of supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) young people with a Civic Reception, hosted by Manchester's Lord Mayor.

Set up in 1978 by parents and friends of lesbian and gay men, the group has enjoyed three decades of serving the LGBT youth community within Greater Manchester. Originally a voluntary organisation, it is now part of Manchester City Council Youth Service and runs a number of services including a twice weekly youth group, website and phone line.

The celebration covering 30 years of LGYM history will include a reception with the Lord Mayor in June; an exhibition at the Central Library in August and a gathering of over one hundred LGBT young people in September as part of the Pride Sports event.

One member of the group said: "LGYM offers me one of the safest places in the City where I can be myself without the fear of bullying and abuse. Being here has saved my life and I am proud of being part of the thirty year celebration of such a unique, special and much needed group."

The Lord Mayor of Manchester, Councillor Mavis Smitheman said: "The work carried out by LGYM continues to be invaluable to young people in Manchester and is a tremendous source of support and advice. I am very proud to welcome them and thank them on behalf of the city for protecting the well-being of thousands of youngsters since they launched 30 years ago."
