Lunchtime jackpot for Parklands’ pupils
30 June 2008
Lucky pupils at Parklands High School in Wythenshawe have been presented with the prizes that they won as part of a healthy eating promotion at their school canteen.
For several weeks youngsters at Parklands were able to pick up a prize-winning golden envelope, by opting for the school's meal deal, which includes nutritious foods such as fruit, yoghurt, a healthy drink such as juice or water and a full main meal packed with vitamins and minerals.
The Everyone's a Winner competition was organised by Manchester City Council's school meal provider Manchester Fayre, to help encourage pupils to eat well and as part of a wider discussion about the benefits of a good diet.
Prizes on offer ranged from free breakfast items and fruit bags to book vouchers, CD singles and tickets to Lazerquest.
Councillor Bernard Priest, Executive Member for Finance and Human Resources with a responsibility for school meals at Manchester City Council said: "The promotion was a different way of approaching healthy eating among the pupils and really captured their imaginations. Encouraged by the chance to win a prize many who would not have previously considered the meal deal have discovered they actually enjoyed it and have said they will choose this option more in the future."
Manchester Fayre prides itself on the healthy and diverse menu offered to school pupils across the city, and frequently runs competitions, theme days and events focusing on the importance of a good diet and the long-term health benefits of eating well.
