Inspirational pupils recognised at Town Hall ceremony
2 July 2008
Inspirational pupils from Manchester high schools were invited to a special ceremony in the Town Hall last week to recognise their outstanding talents.
39 pupils from schools across the city received a Manchester Educational Award for their academic, sporting or personal achievements after being nominated by their school.
Winning pupils include 16 year old Mathew Duggan from Parrs Wood Technology College for his outstanding commitment to the school and for helping set up the school based production team 'Shout' in his spare time. Made up of pupils aged 11 to 16 Shout provides technical support around the school for everything from basic lighting for drama and dance GCSEs to the full technical works for the school's highly acclaimed annual drama productions.
Other high flyers include Arian West from Cedar Mount High School who as Head Boy has been an exemplary role model to pupils of all ages, and Shevana Henry from Brookway High School who excels in sports and has represented the school on many occasions.
Similarly, Daniel Sparrow from Parklands High School was nominated for an award for his self-discipline, motivation and the commitment and passion for learning he always shows. He is also an active member of student climate change action group Rite2no, and had the lead role in the climate change awareness film made by the group at the school last summer. This film has been shown to 17,000 young people so far and may soon be shown to all European Members of Parliament.
Councillor Sheila Newman, Executive Member for Children's Services, said: "The hard work, talent and personal endeavour shown by each of these pupils makes them a real inspiration for other young people.
"The co-operation, continuous effort, and motivation they demonstrate makes them an absolute credit both to their schools and to their families and they deserve every success now and in the future."
