It’s a question of safety
8 July 2008
Pupils at St Anthony’s RC primary school in Wythenshawe have beaten off more than 20,000 children across the city to become Manchester Junior Schools Road Safety Quiz champions.
This is the third victory for the Dunkery Road school with previous wins in 2000 and 2006.
Organised by Manchester City Council's Road Safety Team, the quiz is designed to promote interest in and knowledge of a range of road safety matters amongst 7 - 11 year olds.
More than 108 Manchester schools took part in the competition, which comprises a number of knock out heats over several months.
The children were tested on a range of road safety issues in both team and individual rounds, based on the Junior Highway Code 'Arrive Alive.'
Four teams of eight children reached the finals - St Ambrose RC in Chorlton, Northenden Primary, All Saint's in Gorton, and St Anthony's in Wythenshawe.
After a nail biting finish, with everything hanging on the last question, this year's winners were St Anthony's with All Saint's Gorton as runners up.
Councillor Richard Cowell, Executive Member for Environment and the Chair of the School Travel Group says: "I'm delighted to see the Junior Schools Road Safety Quiz is as popular as ever, with many primary schools entering year on year.
"Teachers and children across the city have put a lot of hard work into learning about the Highway Code, and once again there has been a very high standard in the preliminary rounds. The quiz ensures that over 20,000 children will have increased their knowledge in road safety and will be more aware of road safety issues relevant to their age group."
Adrian Knight, Deputy Head at St Anthony's says: "Road safety is an issue that we take very seriously with all our pupils and this quiz is a fun and educational way of sharing important messages. We work very closely with Manchester's Road Safety team who do a tremendous job in ensuring that as many children as possible stay safe on Manchester's roads.
"This is the third year that we have won this quiz and we will be doing our very best to remain champions next year."
