City Council 'Outstanding' in Adult Education

28 July 2008

Staff and learners at Manchester Adult Education Service are celebrating after receiving an 'outstanding' award for Family Learning and 'good' award for the service, following their Ofsted inspection.

During the week long visit, Ofsted inspectors observed teaching and interviewed learners, staff and partners to find out how MAES provision meets the needs of Manchester residents. Information and Communications Technology, Arts and Crafts, Modern Foreign Languages, Literacy,Numeracy and English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) were also inspected and all received good results.

Family Learning courses such as 'Confident Parent, Confident Child' and 'Family Number' are enjoyed by over 2,000 adults and children across the city. The report highlighted how the number of male learners, a traditionally hard to reach group, was increased through courses such as 'Dads and Lads' a six week robot making course and the effective use of a multi-lingual nursery worker supporting adults and children in English classes.

Councillor Sue Murphy, Executive Member for Employment and Skills for Manchester City Council said: "We are delighted with this inspection which reflects the enormous commitment by staff and learners in promoting adult learning in Manchester. There are so many exciting courses across the city available to local residents. The staff make learning really interesting and enjoyable and I am delighted that they are getting the praise they deserve. Well done to everyone involved."
