Residents invited to comment on new academy plans

24 September 2008

Manchester City Council is inviting Wythenshawe residents to share their views about an innovative new educational academy.

As part of Manchester's Academies and Building Schools for the Future programme, proposals have been developed for seven new academies across the city.

One of these new academies will be called Manchester Health Academy and will be a partnership between Central Manchester and Manchester Children's University Hospitals NHS Trust, Manchester City Council and The Manchester College.

The new £19m academy will replace Brookway High School and Sports College and will include a community library on site. It is due to open in September 2010.

Residents are invited to view plans for the new academy building and community library at a series of drop in events from Thursday, 25th September to Wednesday, 1st October.

Detailed plans for the academy will be on display at the following two venues:

  • Sports facilities (community entrance), Brookway High School and Sports College, Moor Road, Wythenshawe M23 9BP from Thursday, 25th September to Wednesday, 1st October
  • Monday 3pm - 9pm
  • Tuesday 3pm - 9pm
  • Wednesday 3pm - 9pm
  • Thursday 3pm - 9pm
  • Friday 3pm - 9pm
  • Saturday 9.30am to 12.30pm Sunday 9.30am - 12.30pm

In addition, the plans will also be on display at the Tesco Metro store on Altrincham Road, Baguley, Wythenshawe from 10am to 2pm on Tuesday 30th September.

Please note that the project manager and representatives from the design team, Manchester Library and Information Service and the South Manchester Regeneration Team will be available on Thursday, 25th September from 4pm to 6pm at Brookway High School and Sports College and the Tesco store on Tuesday, 30th September from 10am to 2pm to answer any questions about the new building.

The new academy will be much more than a secondary school. It will forge partnerships with education and business and will provide opportunities for both pupils and the residents of Wythenshawe and beyond.
