The perfect ten for farmers and producers

9 October 2008

With fresh local produce back on the menu for many families, it’s no wonder that Manchester’s Farmers and Producers Market is as popular as ever.

So popular in fact that it is celebrating 10 years this weekend!

The Farmers and Producers Market has always been a success with foodies across the city, securing its position as one of the most popular events in Manchester, and with more and more households choosing fresh, organic, local produce stalls look to be busier than ever one decade on.

The market takes place every second and fourth weekend of every month (Friday and Saturday) in Piccadilly Gardens and includes stalls selling seasonal game, traditional cheeses, local confectionary and freshly baked breads.

Mrs Kirkham's Lancashire Cheese, is just one of the stalls that has operated on the market since it first opened in 1998. Graham Kirkham who runs the business said: "It's been a real learning curve for my business. For it to reach 10 years is a real achievement and it is great to be part of it."

Savin Hill, selling British white beef, middle white pork, wild game and damson products is another long-standing company who has found the Farmers and Producers Market to be the mainstay of its business.

Councillor Paul Andrews, Executive Member for Neighbourhood Services said: "It's the quality of the local farmers and producers represented that makes this market so successful. We're delighted to be celebrating its 10 year anniversary and thank all customers past and present for making it such an important part of city centre life."

Although celebrating 10 years of trading, the Farmers and Producers market continues to develop and evolve recently opening a new fruit and vegetable stall and welcoming a brand new fresh fish trader this weekend as the birthday celebrations get underway.

These will take place on Friday 10 October in Piccadilly Gardens will include music from an authentic country band to entertain lunchtime customers as they shop and a giant birthday pork pie, supplied by Orchard Pigs, which will be sold off in pieces with all proceeds going to the Lord Mayor's Charity Appeal Trust.

All traders will also be offering taste sessions of their market produce and will share recipe ideas for anyone wanting to recreate the deliciously tempting treats at home.
