Happy Birthday as Christmas Markets reach a decade

18 November 2008

Manchester Christmas Markets are about to celebrate ten years and actor John Thomson will help kick off the birthday party when they open on Tuesday 18 November.

Fresh from rehearsing his role as the dastardly Captain Hook in this season's pantomime, Peter Pan at the Opera House, John Thomson will be on hand to cut the ribbon as the tenth Christmas Markets get underway.

Manchester Christmas Markets are now an essential part of the city's Christmas programme and the festive season wouldn't be complete without a mug of steaming hot gluhwein, unusual gift ideas and a singing reindeer.

Councillor Pat Karney, city centre spokesperson for Manchester City Council said: "There is always an incredible buzz around the Christmas Markets and the excitement has been steadily building in anticipation of this year's grand opening. Manchester's Christmas markets are recognised as among the best in the country and they have certainly enhanced the city centre. The atmosphere looks set to reach fever pitch this year with more stalls than ever before and all that is left to do is to wish Manchester Christmas Markets a happy tenth birthday - here's to the next ten!"

This year's Christmas Markets are set to be bigger and better than ever with an additional site located in Exchange Square, where stalls will serve food and drink, and a brand-new layout planned for Albert Square to create more space in what is considered by many as the heart of the Christmas Markets.

Manchester Christmas Markets provide a unique mix of European and local producers offering everything from art & crafts, fashion items, food stalls and unique gift ideas.
