Victims of domestic violence remembered at Peace Gardens vigil

9 December 2008

People from across Manchester are being invited to join a candlelit vigil to remember victims of domestic abuse who are killed by their partners or ex-partners each year.

Nationally two women are killed each week by a partner or former partner and in Manchester 17,000 women experience domestic abuse every year.

Everyone is welcome to join the vigil - just  take along a torch or a holder for a tealight candle to the Peace Gardens at 5pm on Wednesday 10th December. There will also be two large birthday cakes at the event to mark the 30th anniversary of the Women's Domestic Abuse Helpline.

Councillor Sue Murphy, Manchester City Council's Lead Member for Women's Issues, said: "One in four women and one in six men experience domestic abuse in their lifetime, so this is something likely to touch everyone's lives at sometime or another. This vigil is to help draw attention to the facts about domestic abuse and to highlight the help available to those affected by it."

Caroline Marsh, Director of Manchester Adult Services and Chair of the Manchester Domestic Abuse Management Group added: "We're also very pleased to be commemorating the work of the Domestic Abuse Helpline, a really important service for the victims of domestic abuse in the city and one that we're proud to support."
