Monastery on song for Christmas celebration

9 December 2008

The magnificent surroundings of Gorton Monastery will ring with the sound of festive music and carols on Sunday 21 December.

Gorton Voice Choir will perform at A Christmas Celebration Concert starting at 2pm in the 1863 monastery designed by famed architect Edward Pugin and now one of Manchester's premier events venues.

Elaine Griffiths, The Monastery's Chief Executive, said: "The concert will be a great way for all the family to start Christmas week. Everyone is welcome and children accompanied by adults get in free."

Sean McGonigle, Director of Regeneration for New East Manchester, said: "It's great to see the Monastery being used more and more for events involving the whole community. Restoring the building was a positive thing for the area and we hope many local people will support this event."

Doors open at noon and festive refreshments, mulled wine and mince pies will be available in the Café from noon until 4pm.

Tickets are £10 for adults and £5 for concessions. All proceeds will go to the Monastery of St Francis & Gorton Trust, which rescued the building from neglect and championed its £6 million restoration.
