Green vehicles are not rubbish

24 July 2009

Pupils at Oswald Road school in Chortlon received a visit from Manchester City Council’s recycling team with one of their brand new, environmentally friendly recycling vehicles.

The Waste and Recycling team have invested in 40 new recycling and domestic waste vehicles and brought one along to the school fair.

Pupils had the chance to have a go at operating the vehicle for a hands-on lesson in recycling. They, along with their parents, also learnt about how the whole recycling process works.

Councillor Richard Cowell, Manchester City Council's Executive Member for the Environment said: "The new vehicle was really popular with the young people who got to see how it worked and to have a go themselves. It was a really interesting way to teach families about the importance of recycling and we're proud that these new vehicles are also doing their bit for the environment."

The vehicles are more environmentally friendly than the old one with carbon monoxide emissions down 30%, contribution to acid rain reduced by 60% and local pollution by 80%.

The new vehicles all include messages about the new improved recycling service that the city council offers and how all households can recycle and reduce their waste.

Manchester City Council has invested in 18 brand new domestic waste vehicles and 22 new recycling vehicles.
