Free bike marking for security conscious cyclists

22 January 2010

Cyclists young and old are being invited to come along and have their bikes security marked at an event in Gorton this weekend.

Manchester City Council and Greater Manchester Police have organised a bike marking session at Tesco on Hyde Road this Saturday (January 23)

If you got a new bike for Christmas this is the ideal opportunity to get it marked. Officers will be available to security mark cycles and register them on the national property database www.immobilise.com so they can be easily identified and returned if lost or stolen. The bikes are marked with the owner's post-code using an ultra violet pen, which is covered by a clear sticker. This is marked on the frame of the bike and a warning label is also stuck on the frame. The owner will then get a record with all the details on it.  Anyone who wants to get their bike marked should just come along on Saturday between 10am and 3pm.

Manchester City Council Deputy Leader, Councillor Jim Battle said: "Cyclists can come along to get their bikes security marked and also pick up some crime prevention and safety advice."

Neighbourhood Inspector, Damian O'Reilly said: "This event is a great opportunity to inform local people about the simple measures they can take to safeguard their bikes as well as the importance of property marking.  We would encourage all cycle owners to find the time to come to one of these events, as there will also be the opportunity to meet local police officers and take away essential crime prevention advice."
