Recyclers’ golden opportunity to help schools
2 March 2010
Household recycling will be turned into bonuses for youngsters as residents receive ‘golden tickets’ to help local schools.
Manchester City Council is introducing the scheme, encouraging residents in more than 2,500 properties in the Old Moat area of Fallowfield to recycle even more.
And if successful, the scheme will be set up in other parts of the city.
Residents will find a golden ticket tied around the handles of their blue and brown bins every time they use them to recycle materials such as glass, card and plastic bottles.
These can then be collected and used by Old Moat and St Kentigern's primary schools to provide everything from new books and computers to improvements to the school grounds.
Residents with children at either school can give the tickets to their youngsters, who can bring them in directly, or they can be dropped off at collection points in local shops and libraries listed at www.manchester.gov.uk/recycling
Councillor Richard Cowell, Manchester City Council's Executive Member for the Environment, said: "We're offering Manchester residents a golden opportunity to help local schools, and all they've got to do is recycle their household waste.
"This is a great chance for residents to begin recycling even more, and it will be their children or their neighbours' children who will benefit. We hope if this scheme works, we can introduce it across other parts of the city."
