Many hands make light work during Moss Side spring clean
11 March 2010
Moss Side is cleaner, brighter and safer thanks to a week of team-work to tidy up the area and tackle issues raised by residents.
Residents said they were worried about drugs, environmental issues and youths causing a nuisance in the area.
So Manchester City Council, officers from Hulme and Moss Side Neighbourhood Policing Team, Mosscare Housing, City South Housing and Adactus all worked together during a Respect Action Week to clean up the area and tackle the issues raised.
During the Respect Action Week between 15 to 21 February:
- Five tons of bulky waste was removed
- Graffiti cleaned
- Illegal drugs recovered and one arrest
- 15 stop and searches leading to two arrests
- Activities laid on for young people
- Community payback teams carried out work on the garden at the Moss Side adventure playground.
- Students from Manchester University and staff from all the agencies carried out a huge litter pick and clean-up.
Manchester City Council's Deputy leader, Councillor Jim Battle said: "We carried out this work, with our partner agencies on a "you said, we did" basis. It shows just what can be achieved when the council, police and housing associations work together with residents."
Manchester City Council's Community Safety Co-ordinator, Kevin Felstead said: "The respect action week was a great success with all the various agencies working together to make a real difference to the area."
